IP Illustration has an opening for the following position.

POSITION TITLE:   Patent Illustrator

POSITION DUTIES:  Combine artistic talent with technical knowledge and research to design prototypes as well as create utility patent, design patent, and trademark illustrations in compliance with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) requirements. Telecommuting permitted from any location in the United States. Duties include: Translate client’s input to determine the most concise way to illustrate the product using mechanical drawings/blue prints, CAD files, spec sheets, hand sketches, photographs, mocked up prototypes, and 3D prototypes; evaluate feasibility of design ideas, based on factors such as appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget, production costs/methods, and market characteristics; interpret the inventor’s input and the client’s written specification to determine how to most clearly depict an invention; use Autodesk Inventor to create 3D parametric solid models of products and prototypes to export to a 2D format; use AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, and/or Adobe Photoshop to convert and edit the 2D output into patent illustrations that will meet or exceed the USPTO requirements; prepare design documentation (such as part and assembly drawings, bill of materials, illustrations for owner’s manuals); create and design computer-generated artwork and/or animation using a variety of art and graphic design techniques for publication; use SolidWorks/AutoCAD/Autodesk Inventor to design/draft and develop designs in 2D and 3D environments; in developing prototypes, consider manufacturing processes to be used as well as part tolerances when working on product design and prototyping; understand industrial standards and regulatory guidelines to visually convey concepts in a way that could convey the client’s position to a judge or jury; conduct meetings with the attorney and/or inventor to discuss patentability and strategy; communicate each project’s scope and requirements; calculate time and cost estimates for scheduling and budgeting purposes; mentor a team of illustrators/designers, communicating to them the requirements for each project; managing expendable resources and deadlines.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Industrial or Graphic Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.  Required experience includes one year* involving each of the following:

·         CAD drafting;

·         Solid/parametric modeling;

·         Product design; and

·         Product manufacturing methods.

*Completion of graduate-level courses or projects covering CAD drafting, solid/parametric modeling, product design, and product manufacturing methods may be substituted for one year of work experience.
